ObamaCare

Obamacare / ACA Marketplace

Health Insurance You Can Actually Afford.

The ACA Marketplace offers subsidies that most people don’t realize they qualify for. A family of four earning $90,000 might pay $0/month. I run the numbers β€” you get the plan that fits your doctors and your budget.

What It Is

The ACA Marketplace, in Plain English

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace β€” known commonly as “Obamacare” β€” is where individuals and families buy health insurance when they don’t get it from an employer or the government.

The big draw isn’t the insurance itself β€” it’s the federal subsidies that bring premiums down dramatically based on income and household size. Most people who shop the Marketplace qualify for some help, and many qualify for plans that cost $0 to $50 per month.

The catch? The Marketplace is confusing on purpose. Plans are sorted into metal tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum), networks change every year, and the cheapest plan isn’t always the best fit for your actual doctors and prescriptions. My job is to translate.

Who Qualifies

People Who Get Real Value From ACA

If you fall into one of these situations, the Marketplace probably has a good plan for you β€” often with a subsidy you weren’t expecting.

πŸ’Ό

Self-Employed & Freelancers

No employer coverage? The Marketplace is built for you. Subsidies based on your business income, not your gross revenue.

🏠

Small Business Owners

If you don’t qualify for group plans, individual ACA coverage is often cheaper anyway. Spouse and kids can be covered together.

Families Earning $30K-$120K

This income range typically gets the largest subsidies. Many families end up paying $0-$200/month for solid coverage.

Adults 26+ Off Parents’ Plan

Aged off your parents’ insurance? Don’t go uninsured. Many young adults qualify for $50/month plans or less.

Bronze vs. Silver vs. Gold

Which Metal Tier Fits You?

The metal tiers describe how much the insurance pays vs. how much you pay when you use it. Here’s the trade-off.

Lower Premium

Bronze Plans

  • Insurance pays ~60% of costs
  • Lowest premium
  • Highest deductible (often $7K-$9K)
  • Good for healthy people who rarely visit doctor
  • Pair with a Health Savings Account
  • Bigger risk if you actually need care

Gold and Platinum exist too β€” higher premium, lower out-of-pocket. They make sense for people with ongoing medical needs. We’ll figure out which tier matches YOUR actual healthcare usage.

FAQ

Questions People Ask Me

When can I enroll?

Open Enrollment runs November 1 – January 15 each year for coverage that starts the following January or February. Outside that window, you can still enroll if you have a Qualifying Life Event: job loss, marriage, divorce, new baby, move to a new state, loss of other coverage. That triggers a 60-day Special Enrollment Period.

How much subsidy will I get?

It depends on your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) and household size. As a rough rule: families earning under 400% of the Federal Poverty Level usually get help, and recent rules expanded subsidies even further. The only way to know for sure is to run the numbers β€” which I do for free.

What if my income changes mid-year?

Important: subsidies are based on your projected annual income. If you earn more than expected, you may have to repay some subsidy at tax time. If you earn less, you may get money back. I help you estimate accurately and update the Marketplace if your income changes substantially.

Will my doctors accept my plan?

Each Marketplace plan has its own provider network. Before enrolling, I check whether your specific doctors are in-network. If keeping them matters, we’ll prioritize plans that include them β€” even if it costs slightly more.

What about Medicaid?

If your household income is low enough, you may qualify for Medicaid instead of an ACA Marketplace plan. The income cutoff varies by state. If you’re close to the line, I help figure out which program fits β€” sometimes a mix of Medicaid for kids and Marketplace for adults is the best setup.

Why don’t you charge for this?

I get paid by the insurance carriers when you enroll β€” not by you. The cost of your plan is the same whether you sign up with me, on Healthcare.gov directly, or through a 1-800 call center. The difference is whether you get a real person who picks up next year when you have a question.
