What It Is

Final Expense, in Plain English

Final Expense insurance is a small whole life policy designed for one specific job: covering the costs that come at the end of life. Think funeral, burial or cremation, medical bills, and any small debts left behind.

Coverage amounts typically range from $5,000 to $50,000 — small compared to traditional life insurance, but exactly the amount most families need to handle final costs without dipping into savings or borrowing money.

Unlike term insurance, Final Expense never expires. Your premium is locked in for life. Your beneficiaries get a guaranteed payout when you pass — usually within days, no probate required. And many policies don’t require a medical exam, which is why it’s the go-to choice for seniors and people with health issues.

Level vs. Graded vs. Guaranteed

Which Policy Type Fits You?

Final Expense comes in three flavors based on your health. Here’s what each one means.

Some Health Issues

Graded or Guaranteed

  • Coverage builds over 2-3 years
  • Higher premiums
  • Fewer or no health questions
  • Guaranteed acceptance available
  • 2-year waiting period typical
  • For health conditions Level won’t cover

My job is to find you the best policy type you qualify for. Most clients qualify for Level — but if not, Graded or Guaranteed still gets you covered.

FAQ

Questions People Ask Me

How much coverage do I really need?

Most families need between $10,000 and $25,000. The average U.S. funeral costs $8,000-$12,000. Add medical bills not covered by insurance, small debts, and a cushion for the family, and $15,000-$20,000 is a sensible target. We’ll work backwards from what your family actually needs.

Will I have to take a medical exam?

Almost never. Most Final Expense policies are simplified-issue: you answer 5-15 health questions on the application, and the carrier decides. If health issues disqualify you from simplified-issue, guaranteed-issue policies are available with zero health questions — but they cost more and have a 2-year waiting period.

Can I be denied coverage?

For Level coverage, yes — certain conditions (recent cancer, active heart failure, terminal illness) disqualify you. But Graded or Guaranteed policies are still available almost regardless of health. If you have a pulse and a checking account, I can find you SOMETHING.

Will the premium ever go up?

No. Whole life premiums are locked in for life. The rate you pay at signup is the rate you pay forever. Same with the death benefit — it never decreases as long as the policy stays in force.

How fast does my family get the money?

Usually within 7-14 days of submitting the death certificate. No probate, no court delays — it goes directly to your named beneficiary. That’s the whole point: cash in their hands fast enough to actually pay for the funeral.

What if I already have life insurance through work?

Work-based life insurance usually ends when you retire or change jobs — exactly when you need it most. Final Expense is permanent and yours forever, regardless of employment. Many clients keep both for the working years and then rely on Final Expense in retirement.
